World Hypertension Day: The incidence of hypertension increases with age

Prague, 16th May 2016 - Hypertension, or high blood pressure is one of the most common diseases of civilization. World Hypertension Day, which falls on May 17, primarily arose as a reminder of prevention against this disease. This year for the tenth time draws public attention to the importance of regular measurements of pressure. Patients with this disease should ensure compliance with quarterly visits at general practitioners where they are registered and where they are usually treated with this disease. A special module from CompuGroup Medical (CGM) focused on hypertension, ASSISTENT PL, helps the doctors to make care of patients with hypertension as comfortable as possible

"The incidence of this disease increases with age. While 6 out of 10 sixty-year-olds suffer from arterial hypertension at seventy-year-olds it is already 8 out of 10," says MD. Igor Karen, Vice-chairman of the Society of General Practice of the Czech Medical Association of Jan Evangelista Purkyně (SVL ČLS JEP) and expert guarantor for this issue. Danger of poor or inadequate treatment or even no recognition of this disease is directly related to the development of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases that can lead to stroke, heart attack or heart failure. Major risk factors include stress, smoking, lack of exercise, heredity and increasing age. As a prevention, people should follow a healthy lifestyle, they should not smoke, overeat, and should carry out adequate physical activity at any age and consume alcohol only within reasonable limits.

"Patients with hypertension should come for regular checkups at least four times a year and for blood tests, as well as urine tests, ECG and other optional tests at least once a year, depending on clinical condition of the patient and discretion of the attending, mostly general practitioner. The terms of these inspections, including laboratory testing, are reminded to physicians by ASSISTENT PL module from CGM, which supports the regularity of these visits," specifies MD. Igor Karen.

"Doctors monitor many factors in patients with high blood pressure and hypertension module can save them time significantly because it searches for potential people with hypertension in database of registered people and automatically assigns them to the appropriate group," says Jan Hlaváček, Director of the Division of Ambulatory Information Systems at CompuGroup Medical and adds: "The module can create patient’s records and statistics and develop individual plan for his inspections in accordance with Recommended Practices of SVL ČLS JEP."

In the Czech Republic, hypertension was observed in approximately 35 % of people aged 25 - 64 in 2014.
