Czech developers test analytical software for early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases

Prague, February 28th 2014 – Czech experts are developing a diagnostic system that will help with early detection of serious diseases. System will be useful particularly when diagnosing various types of cancer. Based on the analysis of data from a large cohort of patients, program shows doctors relevant cases to compare, and thus acts as a secondary consultation for quick verification of diagnosis. The program evaluates the relations between symptoms. Consequently, system saves time of physicians and helps diagnose diseases even before clinical symptoms show up.

"Every day, a physician makes dozens of important decisions. With the rapid development of information technology, they may not be alone when making these decisions," says Vladimír Přikryl, general manager of CompuGroup Medical Czech Republic, who, together with a team of leading Czech experts, develops the system. "The doctor can now use expert systems, which can evaluate a number of variables and compare them with hundreds of confirmed diagnoses of other patients," continues Přikryl and adds: "Every patient is different, but when using modern computer technology analyzing a sufficiently large sample, we may find similar cases that help doctors with diagnosis."

It is early and correct diagnosis of the disease that, in the event of serious cancer diseases, plays a crucial role, and increases the success rate of treatment.

"In the laboratory and hospital information systems, we may find a large number of anonymized data, results of laboratory test or diagnoses. The doctor now thus does not need to refer only to cases of their own practice," says Přikryl.

Program cannot replace a doctor, but may work as a tool to help warn even patients, where the physician would otherwise not be able to determine the disease (the patient is not in a risk group and has no problems). The system highlights the risk of serious diseases even before the first health complications occur.

In the information systems of hospitals and laboratories, anonymous results of laboratory examinations of patients, as well as of healthy population, have been recorded for decades. These may help physicians both in research and in routine practice. "Historical data can also help in predicting and warning of impending health problems. The doctor will thus be able to catch diseases much earlier than before," says Vladimír Přikryl.
