CompuGroup Medical Invites Physicians to Jointly Promote Organ Donation

The initiative “(M)ein Klick fürs Leben” (one click for life) in Rheinland-Pfalz was started to educate people about this topic.

Koblenz, February 14, 2011: despite the fact that Germans are willing to donate an organ after their death, only about 25% have an organ donor ID. One of the possible causes could be that half of all Germans do not feel that they are sufficiently informed about organ donation and are confused about it. For that reason, CompuGroup Medical has become involved in the initiative “(M)ein Klick fürs Leben” and invites physicians to actively discuss the subject with patients.

Physicians are close confidants for patients where medical questions are concerned, and thereby the perfect contact person for the sensitive topic of organ donation. CompuGroup Medical has direct access to clinicians through their software and is encouraging them to jointly promote the topic of organ donation. As a provider of medical information technology, the company reaches one out of two physicians in Germany. The doctor information system is used to help notify about the initiative and the current situation. A physician can then pursue the notification with a simple click, and obtain additional information.

In addition to the system notification, CompuGroup Medical also offers flyers to physicians that they can distribute to their patients. Each flyer includes two organ donor ID’s. They are designed to encourage the reader to actively address the topic and make their own decision rather than have their next of kin deal with it in an emergency. The willingness to donate organs can be documented on the ID as well as any restrictions, and it can also be used to record an objection to organ donation.

Frank Gotthardt, Chief Executive Officer of CompuGroup Medical, knows: “The German population is largely willing to donate organs after death. We now have to continuously communicate the topic, talk about it with people and work on educating them. We would like to advance education about the topic of organ donation, together with the physicians.”

CompuGroup started the initiative last year. Julia Klöckner, chair of the CDU Rheinland-Pfalz, is the initiative’s sponsor. The Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation (German Foundation for Organ Transplantation) will lend their expertise. Go to for more information.
