Enhanced Self-Determination Demanded for Patients

Frank Gotthardt becomes Chair of the Commission for Health Economics (Fachkommission Gesundheitswirtschaft) in Rheinland-Pfalz

Koblenz, August 29, 2011: Pro-patient: the newly founded Landesfachkommission Gesundheitswirtschaft (State Commission for Health Economics) has formulated their policy positions and demands. Their goal is to equip the healthcare system for the future through increased market and competition, efficient use of resources, better organization of healthcare and ensuring financing. This strengthens the patient’s interests.

The Wirtschaftsrat Deutschland (German Economic Council) Rheinland-Pfalz State Association, founded the State Commission for Health Economics in May 2011. This organization includes representatives from all of the healthcare sectors. Frank Gotthardt, Chair of CompuGroup Medical AG, was elected Chair of the Commission. In their recently published position paper, the commission has established their goals: with financing secured, they want to help the healthcare system obtain greater efficiency and competition. The focus of all of their efforts is high quality healthcare for the population.

Every patient should have access to his/her medical data
The communication between physicians with each other or with pharmacies, hospitals and patients must be promoted. “Nowadays, every individual has the option to access his personal data electronically – whether it is his bank account or his phone bill. Likewise, every patient must have the right to receive his data entered or obtained by a participant in the healthcare system electronically on request. Health is our most precious possession – every patient should be able to review his complete record without a lot of effort”, affirms Gotthardt.

Healthy finances through fewer political regulations
The commission wants to campaign for more competition and appropriate regulationby policymakers. This will warrant healthcare that is open to competition, of high quality and strengthens the patient’s own responsibility for his health. In order to not just serve individual interests, but the common good, a realistic impact assessment will be developed for every suggested measure. Regulatory frameworks should only be employed in areas where the market is failing or is against the common good. With this principle, financing the healthcare system can be secured for the future.
